The professional fisherman is called ’lou pescadou’ in Provence. The amateur fisherman is ’lou pescaire.’ Fish is an important element in Provençal cuisine as well as its trade with other regions. Our pescadou carries his net on his shoulders and brings a basket of his freshest catch as a gift to the Newborn King. He wears the traditional ’taiolo’ (band of cloth serving as a belt) and the traditional cotton cap which are both always red for fishermen.
