Also known as the Moorish King, his name is Melchior. To the Newborn King, he brings a gift of frankincense contained in a ciborium. His sumptuously rich attire has given rise to the expression used when referring to a richly clad woman: ’Elle a déshabillé le roi maure.’ (She has taken the King of the Moors’ robes.) Melchior is the symbol of the African nations and has come to represent youth and prayer.
