In the story of the traditional Nativity, the breath of the lowing Cow keeps the Newborn Child warm. It is one of the most familiar and endearing figures of the Nativity scene. It has come to symbolize gentleness and humility. The cow and the donkey have always been the kingly animals of the manger scene. It is said that they were present in the first living Nativity scene created by Saint Francis of Assisi.
Dans la Pastorale traditionale, c’est le souffle du bœuf qui chauffe le Nouveau Né. C’est l’un des figurants le plus familier et le plus apprécié de la crèche. Il symbolise la douceur et l’humilité. Le bœuf et l’âne sont des animaux-rois de la crèche. On dit qu’ils figuraient déjà dans la première crèche vivante réalisée par St. François d’Assise.
