This Black  Wise Man santon has been modified to be used as a Christmas tree ornament.  It comes to us from the workshops of Renée Gateau in Marseille.  Also known as the Moorish King, his name is Melchior. To the Newborn King, he brings a gift of frankincense contained in a ciborium. His sumptuously rich attire has given rise to the expression used when referring to a richly clad woman: ’Elle a déshabillé le roi maure.’ (She has taken the King of the Moors’ robes.) Melchior is the symbol of the African nations and has come to represent youth and prayer.  Wouldn't this make a stunning addition to your Christmas tree?  Or perhaps, you could do a small tree featuring all the traditional Provençal Nativity characters.  Let your imagination be your guide.  This is a collection to which we will regularly add new santons.
 
Ce beau Roi Rouge a été modifié pour s'utiliser comme sujet de Noël sur le sapin.  Il nous provient des ateliers de Renée Gateau à Marseille.  Connu comme le Roi des Maures, il s’appelle Melchior. Son cadeau pour l’Enfant Roi est un ciboire contenant de l’encens. Ses vêtements sont somptueux d’où vient l’expression ’Elle a déshabillé le roi maure,’ que l’on emploie pour décrire une femme richement parée.
